Guy Bonnet passed away

Yesterday, 8 January 2024, Guy Bonnet sadly passed away. Bonnet participated in the Eurovision Song Contest three times: in 1968 as a composer, in 1970 and 1983 as a singer. Born on 8 August 1945, in Avignon, France, Bonnet’s passion for music manifested early in his life. He pursued his love for music with zeal, studying at the Conservatoire in Avignon and later at the Conservatoire in Marseille. Bonnet’s career took a significant turn when he represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest. His first appearance was in 1968 as a composer for Isabelle Aubret’s entry, “La Source.” However, it was his own performance in 1970 with the song “Marie-Blanche” that truly marked his arrival on the international music scene. He graced the Eurovision stage again in 1983 with “Vivre,” showcasing his versatile musical talent. Beyond Eurovision, Bonnet was known for his profound contributions to French chanson, a genre he enriched with his poetic lyrics and melodic compositions. His works often reflected his deep connection to his Provençal roots, blending traditional sounds with contemporary influences. Road to Liverpool: Italy

We can not wait for the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. Therefore, we have a closer look at one of the contestants every day. Today: Italy. Marco Mengoni Marco Mengoni won the Festival di Sanremo 2023. He became the first choice to go to Eurovision, and accepted it. However, it took him some time to decide that this would be with “Due vite”, his Sanremo song. He wrote the song together with Davide Petrella and Davide Simonetta. Marco Mengoni won the X-Factor in 2009. His prize: participation in the Festival Di Sanremo 2010. He also scored his first hit “Dove si vola” with the X-Factor final song. In total, Marco released 7 studio albums and 4 live albums. In 2013 he won the Festival di Sanremo with the song “L’essenziale”. With this song, Marco went to the Eurovision Song Contest, were he got the 7th place. Mengoni reached the number 1 spot in the Italian charts several times: with “Dove si vola” and “L’essenziale”, but also “Guerriero” and “Ti ho voluto bene veramente“. Eurovision vs Sanremo Marco Mengoni was first choice for the Eurovision Song Contest because he won the Festival di Sanremo. He chose to do the job and represent his country. In Eurovision history, the contest and the Festival di Sanremo are closely connected. The idea for the Eurovision Song Contest came from Italian producers. They were enthousiast about Sanremo and wanted to implement it in Europe. The first years, until 1966, the winning song and singer automatically went to Eurovision. After that, sometimes the winner was the contestant, sometimes the winning song. And a few times, another participating song went to Eurovision. Only in the seventies and early eighthies, the festivals were not connected. Most of the times, the winner also had the right to refuse a trip to Eurovision. That happened in 1990. Winning band I Pooh decided to reject the Eurovision offer. Runner up Toto Cutugno accepted it an won the contest. Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest That brings us to Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest. Toto Cutugno was one of the three winners. In 1964, young Gigliola Cinquetti reached the first place with a landslide. Quite recently, in 2021, the band Måneskin did it. Other Italian Eurovision entries became classics. Who doesn’t remember “Piove“, “I treni di tozeur” or “Gente di mare“. The 1958 Eurovision entry “Nel blu dipinto di blu“, later named “Volare”, was probably the most selling Eurovision Song ever. Bookmakers The bookmakers currently predict an 11th place for Marco Mengoni. That is probably not what the Italians expect from “Due vite”. Italy does score very well in Eurovision most of the time, so let’s hope for a high score for Marco. The song And of course, you can listen to the song here. Enjoy “Due vite”!

🇲🇪 Montenegro: Nina Žižić returns to Eurovision

Nina Žižić returns to Eurovision. She will represent Montenegro after the band NeonoeN withdrew. They decided not to participate with their song “Clickbait”. The song was already performed before September 1st of this year. That was reason for the EBU to investigate the case.  Nina Žižić was the runner up of the Montenegrin national final Montesong. Her song “Dobrodošli” was the favourite of the jury. Due to a lower score at the televote, Nina didn’t win. However, today Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG announced that she will represent Montenegro in the 2025 contest. It’s not the first time Nina Žižić represents Montenegro. In 2013, she was on stage accompanying hip hop band Who See. They performed the song “Igranka”, but unfortunately did not reach the final. And now Nina Žižić returns to Eurovision. The song “Dobrodošli” is written and composed by Violeta Mihajlovska, Boris Subotić and Darko Dimitrov. Due to the early stage of selection, we don’t know whether the song will be in the first or second semifinal. Montenegro’s Eurovision history Montenegro first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest as an independent nation in 2007, following its split from Serbia and Montenegro. Despite its small size, the country brought diverse entries ranging from Balkan ballads to modern pop. Montenegro achieved its best result in 2015 with Knez‘s “Adio,” a traditional ballad composed by Željko Joksimović, which finished 13th in the final. However, financial constraints and challenges in qualifying for the final often hindered its success. After withdrawing in 2020 and after due to funding issues, Montenegro will now return to the contest.

Blast from the past: Germany 1958

We know a lot about Eurovision and we want to share this knowledge with you! Therefore we’d like to bring you a blast from the past. Today, we go way back: to 1958, when Margot Hielscher sang her “Für Zwei Groschen Musik” for Germany. Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest Germany has always participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. Only in 1996 they didn’t manage to survive the audio semifinal. Germany managed to have high positions very often, but it was only in 1982 when the country had their first victory: Nicole managed to win the contest with her song “Ein bißchen Frieden”. In 2010 it happened again. Lena won with “Sattelite”. In recent years, Germany seems to have lost it with many songs ending up in last place or close to the last place. Michael Schulte was the exception with a 4th place in 2018. And this year, Isaak was 12th, so the only way is up for Germany. Lena Schlager 1958 Little is known about the 1958 national final. We know that it was held on the 20th of January in the Kleine Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. Eurovision 1957 host Anaid Iplikjan and Kurt A. Jung hosted the show. Twelve artists sang one song each. We know the singers, but only three titles of songs: Evelyn Künneke Erni Bieler Fred Bertelmann Gitta Lind sang “Etwas Leise Musik“ Lale Andersen sang “Die Braut der Sieben Meere“, 4th place Vico Torriani John Paris Margret Fürer Margot Hielscher sang “Für Zwei Groschen Musik“, 1st place Georg Thomalla Peter Lorenz Fred Weyrich We know that one of the songs was called “Drei Häuse Weiter”. However, it is unclear who sang it. source: Eurovision Artists Lale Andersen Margot Hielscher Margot Hielscher was born on September 29, 1919, in Berlin, Germany. She trained as a costume and fashion designer in the 1930s. While studying, she met famous singers and actors and decided to learn to sing and act as well. She worked in film as a costume designer before getting her first acting role in 1940. Margot became a popular actress during World War II, acting and singing in many films. She also toured as a singer to entertain soldiers. After the war, she performed for GIs and worked on the radio. In 1957 and 1958, Margot represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hielscher appeared in 60 films and about 200 TV shows during her career. She was also known for her many singing performances and recorded over 400 songs. In the 1950s, she hosted Germany’s first TV talk show. Margot married film composer Friedrich Meyer in 1959. She lived in Munich for most of her life. Even in her later years, she continued to perform on stage. Margot Hielscher passed away on August 20, 2017, at the age of 97. She was buried in Munich next to her husband, Friedrich Meyer, who died in 1993. Margot Hielscher; photo Beeld en Geluid Für Zwei Groschen Musik “They chose miss Germany, miss France and miss Italy. There’s even a miss Fashion and miss Leg. But because everybody loves music, and there is no miss Jukebox yet, I would like to be miss Jukebox.”, that’s how the lyrics started. “Für Zwei Groschen Musik” (Music for Two Pennies) is a German song performed by Margot Hielscher at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958. The music for the song was composed by Friedrich Meyer, who was Hielscher’s husband. The lyrics were written by Aldo von Pinelli and Ralph Maria Siegel. The song is a charming, nostalgic piece that speaks about enjoying simple pleasures in life, like music, which can bring happiness even when money is scarce. Margot Hielscher performed the song as Germany’s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Hilversum, the Netherlands. The contest took place on March 12, 1958. Hielscher’s performance stood out for its elegance and simplicity, and she sang the song with grace, wearing a stylish outfit and using a telephone prop on stage, just as she had the year before. While wearing a dress with a ‘Miss Jukebox’ sash, and having a vinyl single in her hands throughout the entire song, Margot scored only 5 points. “Für Zwei Groschen Musik” finished in seventh place.
