Not long after, he clinched the top spot at Macedonia’s first Radio Festival, Svezdena Nok , with his song “Vrati Me” – which was also his first single. He soon released another single titled “Obicen Bez Tebe”. In 2008, he showcased “Vremeto Da Zastane” at MakFest, North Macedonia’s premier music festival. This performance earned him the Debut Prize. Just two days later, he achieved another accolade: the MakFest Grand Prix, determined by audience votes. His subsequent single was “Sonce Ne Me Gree”. In 2009, Lozano sought to represent North Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest. Singing “Blisku Do Mene,” he secured fourth place in the national selection Skopje Fest. That same year, Lozano made his presence felt internationally, securing the second prize at both the Pjesma Mediterana Festival in Budva, Montenegro, and the Slavianski Bazar Festival in Vitebsk, Belarus. Another significant achievement that year was his duet “I’m Your Angel” with Magdalena Cvetkoska at the Golden Wings Festival in Moldova, where they clinched the second prize and Lozano was acknowledged as the Best Male Voice. The year 2010 marked another milestone in his career with the release of his debut album, aptly titled “Lozano”. In the same year, he vied for a spot in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Letam kon tebe”, finishing fourth in the national selection. The end of 2012 brought exciting news for Lozano’s fans. On December 28th, Macedonian Radio-Television (MRT) confirmed that Lozano, in collaboration with the legendary Esma Redžepova, would represent North Macedonia in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden. They performed “Pred da se razdeni”. Despite their combined talents, they were unable to progress beyond the second semi-final. For the second year in a row however, Lozano was voted Best Singer by pop magazine Backstage. In May 2014, Lozano did an Australian tour. A month later, he released a new single, “Mandarina”. The song reached the #1 spot at the Mac Hit list. At the Mars Awards the song won prizes for Song Of The Year and the public vote. The follow up of the song, “Kako Tebe Nema Druga” came in June 2015.  A video of the song “Zena Kako Ti” was released in June 2016, followed by “Bonbona” a month later. That song won a prize at Mars 2016. It was awarded Radio Pop Hit of 2016. A year later, it was in summer again, in July, that new music was released: a single and a video titled “Ova leto ke se pamti”. The song won no less than 3 awards at Mars 2017: Absolute Radio Hit, Best Song of 2017 and Best Lyrics. His new song “Kilometri” was released in March 2018. Within 2 months, the song had 1.000.000 views on YouTube. The song was followed by “Jako Jako” in July, a song that even reached 3 million views in a short time. The song was voted song of the Year 2018, while Lozano was voted Singer Of The Year. In November, the song “Nadez” was released. In January 2019, a new album appeared: “Deset”, Lozano’s 3rd album. For the song “Kilometri”, Lozano won an Oskar Popularnosti in Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Deset” was awarded Album of the Year by magazine Story. In March 2019, a new song, “Majko” was released, including video. Among his performances, shows in Bern, Switzerland were included. Also, on 23 March 2019, Lozano was able to perform in the VIP Arena in Skopje. In August, “Ne te vadem op pamet” was his new song and video. In November, he was voted Man Of The Year by Maz Na Godinata. The song “Majko” was awarded a Mac Music Award. Unfortunately, a planned tour through the USA and Canada had to be cancelled due to COVID19. In January 2021 Lozano released a song, “Adugar”, for the children’s tv show Dajte Muzika. In April, he released an own new single called “Vardare”. A year later, “Posle ponokj” was released, followed in June by “Me nervinas”.   Entries Pred Da Se Razdeni (& Esma Redžepova) Country🇲🇰 North Macedonia Year2013 LanguageMacedonianRomani LyricsMagdalena Cvetkovska MusicDarko DimitrovLazar CvetkovskiSimeon Atanasov BackingsEleonora MustafovskaNina Yaneva Results Semi Points: 28Position: 16Running order: 13 Results Finals Points: –Position: –Running order: – https://youtu.be/Vi1VYsOUCsY?si=tto_8mYl1b0Z2-4o

Esma Redžepova

About Quick Facts NameEsma Redžepova-Teodosievska Born08 August 1943 Deceased11 December 2016 Nationality🇲🇰 North Macedonian National SelectionInternal selection 2013Specialen Evroviziski Den 2006Jugovizija 1971 In Eurovision2013 Malmö SongPred Da Se Razdeni (2013, with Lozano) Biography Early Life and Introduction to Music Born on August 8, 1943, in the heart of Skopje, North Macedonia, Esma hailed from the vibrant Romani district of Čair. The youngest in a family of six, Esma’s early years were deeply influenced by the rich tapestry of Romani culture. Her initiation into the world of music began at local events and ceremonies where, even as a child, her melodious voice made her a favorite. In a fortuitous twist of fate, 13-year-old Esma’s talent caught the attention of Stevo Teodosievski, a prominent Macedonian composer and bandleader. Seeing potential in the young songbird, Teodosievski not only mentored her in music but also adopted her, ensuring she received both formal education and intensive musical training. Embarking on a Musical Journey  Under Teodosievski’s guidance, Esma’s repertoire expanded to include various genres: from Macedonian folk to Romani ballads, Turkish classics, and even modern pop. By 1961, she was ready to record her first song. “Čaje Šukarije”, with its catchy rhythm and Esma’s unique voice, became an instant success, marking the beginning of her ascendancy as the “Queen of Romani Songs”. Esma’s distinct sound stemmed from her ability to seamlessly blend traditional Romani music with other genres. This adaptability made her music universally appealing, allowing her to transcend national borders. Throughout the 60s and 70s, her fame skyrocketed, leading to performances across Europe, Asia, and even Africa. In 1971 she took part in Jugovizija, the Yugoslav national final for the Eurovision Song Contest. Her song “Malo Malo” earned a 3rd place. Career Milestones and International Acclaim  Across her illustrious career, Esma recorded over 500 songs and produced multiple albums. She performed in over 40 countries and sang in multiple languages, a testament to both her versatility and the universality of her music. Her tunes resonated with a wide audience, from the Balkans to the far reaches of the Middle East and beyond. One of her most memorable moments on the international stage came in 2013 when she represented Macedonia at the Eurovision Song Contest. Alongside singer Lozano, Esma showcased her timeless appeal to a European audience, further cementing her legacy. Beyond Music: A Humanitarian at Heart  While music was her first love, Esma’s heart had room for much more. She was deeply moved by the plight of her Romani community, which, despite its rich cultural heritage, often faced prejudice and social exclusion. Together with Teodosievski, who she later married, Esma embarked on numerous humanitarian projects. The couple’s most notable endeavor was their decision to foster 47 destitute children. But for Esma and Teodosievski, fostering wasn’t just about providing shelter; it was about holistic development. The children were given formal education, trained in the arts, and most importantly, taught the values of love and unity. This led to the establishment of their ensemble, where many of their foster children performed, thus ensuring the next generation carried forward the Romani musical tradition. Esma’s relentless efforts towards uplifting the Romani community didn’t go unnoticed. The community lovingly bestowed upon her the title of “Romani Mother Theresa”. Legacy Esma Redžepova’s passing on December 11, 2016, marked the end of an era. Yet, her legacy is far from forgotten. As the voice of the Romani people, she championed their cause, bringing their music and issues to the global forefront. More than just an artist, Esma was an emblem of unity, resilience, and compassion. 3 withdrawals in one day: what’s happening!?

Two more countries announced that they would not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest: North Macedonia and Bulgaria. The news came after the Eurovision community woke up this morning with the withdrawal of Montenegro. North Macedonia North Macedonia issued a statement this afternoon: “Such a decision is in the best interest of the citizens, taking into account the increased costs due to the energy crisis, which occupy a large part of the budget of the Public Service, as well as the increased registration fee for the participation in Eurovision 2023. This decision will enable the saving of funds that would have been set aside for the Macedonian delegation’s stay in Liverpool, where Eurovision 2023 is being held.” The North Macedonian broadcaster MRT has announced that they will broadcast the festival. North Macedonia has not been very successful in the past two years. They did not make the final. There was a riot around a flag in both 2021 and 2022. However, in 2019 North Macedonia still won the jury vote. “Proud”, the entry sung by Tamara Todevska, was the country’s most successful ever. Bulgaria The Bulgarian withdrawal was different. In a personal message from the Instagram account @bg_eurovision to OGAE Greece, it was announced that Bulgaria was no longer interested in the Eurovision Song Contest. BG Eurovision announces that no Bulgarian entry should be expected in the coming years. Bulgaria has been very successful in the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years. The country was almost the winner in 2017 with Kristian Kostov and his “Beautiful mess”. Conclusion? Twice (Montenegro and North Macedonia) it is a financial reason that is indicated. It is not clear what is really behind the Bulgarian withdrawal. We can only guess. Both Montenegro (2021) and Bulgaria (2019) have recently skipped a year. Immediately after the most recent Eurovision song contest, North Macedonia already expressed its doubts about participation.

Andrea

© EBU/Nathan Reinds About Quick Facts NameAndrea Koevska Born14 February 2000 Nationality🇲🇰 North Macedonian National SelectionZa Evrosong 2022 In Eurovision2022 Turin SongCircles (2022) Biography Andrea Koevska, known by her stage name Andrea  is a North Macedonian pop singer born in Skopje. Andrea plays  guitar and piano, but says that the voice is her strongest instrument.   Her musical career started quite by accident: she posted short videos on her Instagram account for fun with adaptations and translations of famous pop and rock hits. Her talent and vocal abilities were noticed and recognized by the famous music producer Aleksandar Masevski, who invited her to his studio and offered her a collaboration. He was also the main motivator for her to later enroll at the Faculty of Music – Skopje at the Department of Solo Singing – Popular Genres.  She and Aleksandar decided to start with the lyrics exclusively in English in order for the music to reach the listeners faster and to build an international career easier. Her first song “I Know” was released on October 23, 2020.  In a short time, the song counted hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and more than 4 million views on TickTock. Andrea has also appeared on several podcast shows from Mexico and the Netherlands. In February 2021, as part of the Fejms orchestral music project, she and her team, in collaboration with music composer Bete Ilin, conductor Oleg Kondratenko and video producer Vladimir Mitrevski Gule, performed an orchestral rendition of her songs. In 2022, she took part in the North Macedonian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest, “Za Evrosong 2022”, and she won it with the song Circles. During the opening ceremony, Andrea threw away a North Macedonian flag, in order to have her hands free. North Macedonian broadcaster MRT responded with a statement, in which they said  it was “desecration of a national symbol, which is punishable by Macedonian law”. MRT even considered withdrawal from the contest. That didn’t happen, Andrea apologyzed and sang in Eurovision. Don’t mess with a flag in North Macedonia

You probably haven’t even noticed, but a small thing during the red carpet event yesterday turned into a lot of hassle in North Macedonia. Because contestant Andrea wanted her hands free for the photo, she threw away the flag of North Macedonia. That caused her a big problem. Last night, the national broadcaster MRT came with a statement, in which the broadcaster called the throwing disrespect to the flag. It would even be a violation of North Macedonian law. MRT seriously considered withdrawing Andrea and thus North Macedonia from the competition:  “MRT expects Andrea to apologize to the citizens for such behavior. The public service is considering the possibility of her withdrawal from Eurovision, although care will be taken not to cause more damage to MRT. All legal possibilities for the strictest sanctioning for this scandal will be taken against those responsible in the Macedonian delegation”. It ended well in the end: Andrea apologized on national television. This turned this story into a storm in a teacup. A year before there was also a big fuzz in in the country. Participant Vasil’s video showed three paintings, in the colors of the Bulgarian flag. Besides North Macedonian, Vasil also has Bulgarian ancestors. Nationalist North Macedonians demanded another participant. In the end, the video was taken off the internet and a new version, without the Bulgarian colors, was put online.

Day 7: A crystal mask, a thunderstorm and Murphy’s Law

The penultimate day of rehearsal: it is becoming increasingly clear what the viewer can expect. Today we saw the last artists of the second semifinal. Let’s take a closer look at the rehearsals: AUSTRALIA: Whatever you think of Sheldon Riley, he sings like no other. During his emotional ballad he wears the white suit with the enormous drag of feathers. He wears his crystal mask for most of the act, but it goes off. It can’t be difficult for Australia to make it to the final. CYPRUS: For the first time in years, Cyprus is singing (partially) in Greek again. Andromache and her dancers stand in a kind of shell as they sing the song. We have to admit that we would describe Andromache’s vocals as ‘not bad’. If is that a recommendation….? IRELAND: Ireland falls into the ‘how nice’ category. Brooke’s vocals are certainly not bad, neither is the act. However, you may wonder if this is the song with which Ireland will finally reach the final again. We cannot rule out the possibility that it will not work. NORTH MACEDONIA: Perhaps Andrea had hoped for greater success. She was not happy with her first rehearsal. The song comes across as screaming; a hoarseness that suits Kaliopi (2012 and 2016) but not Andrea. ESTONIA: Unfortunately, Stefan can’t count on the 12 points from Armenia, because the country where his roots lie is performing in the other semifinal. The many movements he makes do have an effect on Stefan’s voice, but somehow it doesn’t seem to matter for the entry. It is a happy song that can easily go through to the final. ROMANIA: The Romanians made some minor changes to the act, making it even better and slicker. Furthermore, it seemed as if WRS had changed the melody of the chorus a little bit here and there. In any case, a spectacular show is in store for Romania. POLAND: The ballad of Polen starts very calmly with Ochman alone on stage. Halfway through, when the song becomes a little less quiet, the aforementioned dancers (forest nymphs?) come on stage. We see that a heavy thunderstorm erupts on the stage. Finally a strong contender for Poland agiain. MONTENEGRO: A ballad in which not much happens in 3 minutes. The advantage is that not much can go wrong. We had already mentioned the blue dress that Vladana is wearing. Behind her a circle that most resembles the fluff ball of a dandelion. It is not sure whether it stands out enough to go to the final. BELGIUM: The Belgians have a strong singer with a gospel-like power ballad in Jérémie Makiese. He will definitely get points for that. Fortunately, because the act he shows looks a bit stiff and doesn’t really do justice to the song and singer. SWEDEN: Murphy’s Law strikes. If one thing goes wrong, everything immediately goes wrong. Problems with the sound, problems with the technique and a falling cameraman meant that she was only able to do one whole runthrough. Cornelia did manage to show how professional she is, by showing a good rehearsal even with all that trouble. CZECH REPUBLIC: The act with lots of light and nice graphics fits very well with the Czech entry. In that respect it is a unity. The vocals, however, leave a lot to be desired. That could cost them their heads if it has to be clear who will go to the final.

Day 4: new sun troubles, a Swedish circle and many more

Today is the day of the stage again. Today the EBU has made an official statement about it: “During the technical tests in Turin, the production team has experienced challenges with how long it takes to adjust the “sun” to different positions in the time between the different performances. Together with the host station RAI it was therefore decided that the sun will remain in the same position during all 40 songs, to ensure a fair competition for all participating countries.”. What position that is, is still being discussed. So to be continued again. It is certain that a number of countries now have to make changes in their staging. Meanwhile, 9 countries rehearsed for their performance in the second semifinal. IRELAND: Brooke takes the stage in a bright blue suit. During her performance she is assisted by four dancers. They start the song lying on the floor! Ireland uses many floor projections. Brooke is also praised by Eurovision.tv for her strong voice. Pyrotechnics are used at the end of her performance. NORTH MACEDONIA: Andrea stands alone on the podium for North Macedonia. She sings her song completely wrapped in black leather. In her performance she uses the lifting bridges over the water. Shadows of hands are visible on the LED screens. The sun is not only orange but also white and blue. ESTONIA: Stefan starts his performance on the B stage. He is accompanied only by his guitar. Later in the song, he goes wild: then he uses the entire stage to present his performance. The two cowboys from the national final stayed home. ROMANIA: WRS from Romania wears glittering wetlook trousers. He also wears a red blouse, but according to Eurovision tradition, that goes off. He turns out to be wearing a sleeveless shirt with glitter underneath. There is a lot of dancing. As a result, the Romanian likely gets a lot of attention from the crowd. POLAND: The Polish competitor Ochman is also in black, he wears a black suit. He is assisted by four dancers, who seem to represent some kind of water spirits. Flashing light effects can be seen during the performance. The waterfall on the stage is also used… what else could we expect with a song about a river? MONTENEGRO: Vladana has her entire performance on the B stage. She wears a blue dress during her performance. The background is also blue, with splashes of white as graphics. Vladana mainly remains in one place. BELGIUM: The Belgian Jérémie Makiese impressed with his song. Jérémie is flanked by four dancers. He himself wears blue-grey trousers, a black shirt and a silver jacket, while the dancers wear black jackets. At the end of the act all the light falls on Jérémie, who is standing on a platform on which flames are projected. SWEDEN: Cornelia Jakobs ranks high among the bookmakers. As the Swedes always do, Cornelia Jakobs also puts on the same act as during the national final Melodifestivalen. The starry sky at the beginning, the large, first green and then red, circular plate right behind Cornelia, even the silver-black clothing and the bare feet are the same. CZECH REPUBLIC: The Czech group We Are Domi is the last to rehearse today. The group uses a lot of light, which makes you feel like you’re in a disco. Funny effect: the ‘sun’ on stage looks like a vinyl album here. Eurovision.tv mentions the cello-string guitar: the guitarist made it himself.

UEFA 2020: DAY 11

It’s day 11 of the European Championship soccer already. Today, no less than four matches will be played. To start with Ukraine against Austria. Both countries once had an act containing a burning fake piano. It was Mélovin who played the piano in his song “Under the ladder” in 2018. He was not the first one to do so. In 2015 The Makemakes had a piano burning during the performance of “I am yours”. The second match is between North Macedonia and the Netherlands. Both countries once had a song about darkness and light. The 2012 North Macedonian entrant Kaliopi sang “Crno i belo”, which means black and white. The Dutch sisters of O’G3NE sang “Lights and shadows” in 2017. Russia will meet Denmark tomorrow. It was back in 2000 when Russia and Denmark ended up in the top, Denmark as the winner, Russia as the number 2. When The Olsen Brothers won with “Fly on the wings of love”, Alsou was the runner up with “Solo”. Another match will be the the one from Finland against Belgium. In 1977, both countries were favorites to win the contest. Both ended up disappointed. Finnish Monica Aspelund and her “Lapponia” ended up in 10th place, while Belgian Dream Express brought their “A million in one, two, three” to a 7th place.

UEFA 2020: DAY 7

We already face the 7th day of UEFA 2020. Again, three matches will be played. The first one will be Ukraine against North Macedonia. Both countries have had a contestant who faced troubles because of his or her identity. Gaitana sang “Be my guest” in 2012. The song is a soccer anthem, with the music being based on the vuvuzela. Yuriy Syrotyuk, politician of a nationalist political party, said that with this contestant people might think Ukraine is an African country. Gaitana is half Congolese. 2021 North Macedonian contestant Vasil faced a petition because in the video, something that looked like the Bulgarian flag was shown. Vasil also has the Bulgarian nationality. The second match is Denmark vs Belgium. We all know that the only Belgian winner, Sandra Kim, was a 13 year old child. But it was also a child star who participated in the 1985 contest for Denmark. It was Leah Bundgård, the 8 year old daughter of Søren Bundgård. Søren was the male half of the duo Kirsten & Søren. The third and last match will be between The Netherlands and Austria. That reminds us of 2014, when it was either one of them to get the win. It was the duo Common Linnets for the Netherlands coming second with “Calm after the storm”. It was Conchita Wurst for Austria winning with “Rise like a Phoenix”. But hey, you published “Rise like a Phoenix” before? Touché, but who minds watching Conchita’s performance twice?
