Ukrainian Igor Vovkovinskiy passed away

Today, we received the sad news that, at the age of 38, Igor Vovkovinskiy passed away. Vovkovinskiy was featured in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest when he carried Zlata Ognevich to her place on stage. With the song “Gravity” she came third that year.Igor Vovkovinskiy was 2.34 meters tall. He originated from Ukraine but studied law in the United States. During the press conference in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, he said that he didn’t want to talk about the negative parts of being so tall, as he felt he was happy by the time. In addition to the Eurovision Song Contest, Igor appeared in the comedy “Hall pass”. He also gained fame by wearing a t-shirt that read “World’s biggest Obama supporter”. In 2007 he was part of a series, “Inside extraordinary humans: the science of gigantism”. In 2010 he played himself in “The dr. Oz show”. About the reason of his gigantism several stories are going on. It seamed that, because of a tumor, pressing on his pituitary gland, his body made a lot of growth hormones.Two years ago, it became clear that Vovkovinskiy had heart problems. He passed away on 20 August.

Today we continue the Eurovision Universe Summer Party with an absolute banger from 2010. Satellite is the winning German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo. Lena Meyer-Landrut represented the country with the song, composed by Julie Frost and John Gordon. The German entry won with flying colours, with a total of 246 points. Kate Ryan (Katrien Verbeeck) from Belgium started her singing carreer in 2001, and  found fame with a string of dance hits. These included covers, mostly.  In 2006, she represented Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Athens, Greece. Unfortunately she didn’t make it to  the final, but with “Je t’adore” she gave us a great contribution to our summer party.

Today, French judoka Clarissa Agbégnénou won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Agbégnénou, French but of Togolese descent, has won the gold medal at the World Championships judo already for five times. One other time, she was a member of the winning team. However, this was her first time at the Olympic Games. But wait…. isn’t there a Eurovision connection? Yes, there is! You can find out at the Madame Monsieur facebook page. In november 2017, she was a part of the very first videoclip of their song “Mercy”. The song represented France in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. “She came as she is, with simplicity, kindness and conviction. Today you are Olympic champion Clarisse and how proud of you! Thank you for all these beautiful emotions!”, Madame Monsieur adds. You can see her at the video at 0.10.

Immediately after Måneskin won the contest with their entry ”Zitti e buoni”, the battle between several Italian cities has commenced. In this article, we’ll give you some insights on one of the contenders, Rome. We’ll tell you a bit more about the city, sights and some hotspots you must see. We’ve added some fun facts, so you can show off your historical knowledge of Rome to your Eurovision friends. Where are we going to in 2022?

One thing is for sure: we go to Italy in 2022. However, there are a lot of options. But we don’t have more specific information yet. As you could have read here, Italian broadcaster RAI started a bid process. No less than 17 (!!) cities and regions submitted their candidacy, being: Acireale Alessandria Bertinoro di Romagna Bologna Florence Genoa Jesolo Matera Milan Palazzolo Acreide Pesaro Rimini Rome Sanremo Turin Trieste Viterbo   Tomorrow, RAI will provide these cities and regions bid books. Before the 4th of august, they all have to submit their full details. It is likely that, the more cities know, the more cities withdraw. Two years ago, even Amsterdam decided to withdraw as none of the venues there was available.

Tonight is the night: we will find out who wins the final of the UEFA European Soccer Championship! The match is between England and Italy. And what else can we do than provide you winners? Four times, an English singer or a (partly) English group won for the UK. It all started with Sandie Shaw in 1967; Brotherhood of Man in 1976; Bucks Fizz in 1981 and Katrina & The Waves in 1997. Italy won the contest three times. Back in 1964, Gigliola Cinquetti got the prize, followed by Toto Cutugno in 1990. And…. this year, it was the popular band Måneskin who got the award!
