UEFA 2020: DAY 12

Today, two matches will be held again in the European Soccer Championship. We start with the match between Scotland and Croatia. Scotland once sent Rikki, Croatia sent Roko. Both had something on their clothes: Rikki a touch of Scottish clothing, Roko a pair of wings. Rikki sang about seing a UFO, Roko about his dream. Czech Republic will play agains England. Hip hop and rap in Eurovision, it is seen very seldom. In 2018, Czech Republic added a little bit of these styles to the song “Lie to me”, sung by Mikolas Josef. In 1995, a hip hop group from London represented the United Kingdom: Love City Groove, with the song with the same name.

UEFA 2020: DAY 8

The European Soccer Championship has already reached it’s 8th day. Today, we will see three other matches. To start with Sweden-Slovakia. What we found was a couple of mystical songs. Sweden once sent the group One More Time to the contest with the song “Den vilda”. One of the members of One More Time was Peter Grönvall, the son of Abba’s Benny Andersson. Another one, his wife Nanne Grönvall, is still very famous in Sweden. For Slovakia we chose a song about the beautiful area of Horehronie in Slovakia. The song, which was also called “Horehronie”, was sung by Kristina and hit the number one spot in the Slovak charts. Croatia and Czech Republic will play against eachother. Girls in not too much clothes! That is what brings those two countries together. We thought about Albina, who represented Croatia this year. We also thought about Tereza Kerndlová, who sang “Have some fun” in 2008. And the last match for today is the one between England and Scotland. That made us bring up two ladies, who both earned the trophy for the United Kingdom. Who remembers Sandie Shaw, barefoot, back in 1967? And who remembers Lulu, with false eyelashes and dressed in pink, yelling “Olé!” at the end of the song? Sandie was English, Lulu was Scottish.

UEFA Euro 2020: day 3

Today, we already have the third day of the European soccer chiampionship, UEFA Euro 2020. Let’s dive into the Eurovision history again with the countries that play today: First of all we have England against Croatia. England is, and Croatia was, part of a larger country. We take a look at former winners from both the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia. Bucks Fizz won for the UK in 1981; not really because of their singing skills, but especially because of the act. The boys ripped off the girls’ skirts. Three of the four members of Bucks Fizz were English; Mike Nolan originates from Ireland. The only ever Yugoslav winner is a band from Zadar, Croatia: Riva. They won with “Rock me”. Singer Emilia Kokić is still active and participated in Croatian national finals many times. Austria and North Macedonia will compete too. Both countries had their biggest success with a diva singing a beautiful ballad. In 2014, Austria won the contest with Conchita Wurst and her song “Rise like a phoenix”. Tamara Todevska did not manage to win the entire contest for North Macedonia in 2019, but she won the jury vote with her song “Proud”. And the third match will be between Ukraine and The Netherlands. That could have been the big battle of the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest as well. Maruv, who won the Ukrainian final with the song “Siren song”, was one of the favorites rightaway. But Ukrainian tv decided to disqualify the singer, due to political reasons. The contest was left without a favorite until Dutch Duncan Laurence presented his song “Arcade”. And we all know what happened with thát song….

TIX wins Barbara Dex Award

Norwegian contestant TIX has won the Barbara Dex Award. The award is reached out by our friends of songfestival.be. It is a prize for the contestant with the most remarkable clothes in the Eurovision Song Contest. This year, the fake furr coat with huge wings TIX was wearing, gets the award. Malta and Switzerland winners semifinals

The results of both the semifinals are known. Malta won the first one and Switzerland the 2nd one. Where the qualifiers of the 2nd semifinal were very clear (number 11, Denmark, follows with a distance), it was a close call at the first semifinal. Reactions: the artists who missed the final

Six countries, so six artists missed the final yesterday evening. Five of them already knew they would go to Eurovision more than a year ago. They were supposed to represent their country in the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. Only the Croatian Albina was recently selected for the contest. Most of them showed a reaction at their social media. We did a small view: Vasil (North Macedonia) and Roxen (Romania) haven’t given a reaction so far. Montaigne did, but she did not mention her result in Eurovision in it. She says that it is a good moment to advertise for a t-shirt she wore. Albina (Croatia): Did we make you dancin’ ? Well that’s most important! Sending you a lot of positive energy, and thank you for the love you are sending us. Everything happens for a reason – can’t wait to see what’s coming for me next. Lesley Roy (Ireland): I gave it my all for Ireland for the last 18+ months! I am so grateful for such an amazing team and creative staging. 1st semifinal overview

Of course we first see beautiful images of the Netherlands. The tiny house already plays a role. Unfortunately the final might be one bridge to far for her, we think. Russia: You cannot miss it: Mazinha is a Russian woman. If you think she is going to perform the same trick as Linda Wagenmakers did: keep looking, she is doing something different. Mazinha will definitely reach the final. Sweden: If you follow Melodifestivalen you will, as usual, see not much new things. But people who were concerned about Tusse’s voice can rest assured: there is nothing wrong with that. Tusse goes straight to the final. Australia: The story is known, Montaigne is not in Rotterdam. You don’t notice that. Her performance is in every way a lot stronger than anything we’ve seen of her before. However, we think it’ll be tough for Montaigne to reach the final. North Macedonia: Vasil comes with a ballad. And then half of the viewers say “wow, beautiful”, and the other half “boring”. But “Here I stand” suddenly means something completely different now that Vasil came out as gay in public two weeks ago. We are pretty sure that it’s not gonna help him to a place in the final. And then Nikkie de Jager comes to update us on everything that has happened online in recent weeks. Then Edsilia Rombley talks to us from the greenroom, after which the show continues. Ireland: Ireland does not use LED screens but cardboard. Two particularly handsome ladies serve all those pieces of cardboard in the Irish act. Yes, as a TV viewer you miss that part. Reaching the final will be tough, but not impossible. Belgium: You could expect it: Hooverphonic is not in for a puppet show and therefore puts down a more down to earth act. As a result, Geike Arnaert’s strong vocals come out all the better. Not making concessions could just result in something beautiful. One of the editors of Eurovision Universe has already promised to eat his shoe if Belgium does not make it to the final. We think that will very well be possible. Israel: We can only say that Eden Alene is doing her best. Yet “Set me free” is not an entry that stands out from the rest. Eden sings a very high note: great that she does that, but it is not necessarily beautiful. The final is probably very far away for Eden. The Roop is ranked 8th in the polls. A top ten listing should certainly be possible for the Roop.
