This morning: Australia decides

This morning, 10:30 CET, Australia decides. It’s the second time Australia has a national final to decide who is going to represent them in the Eurovision Song Contest. You can watch the show here.  Ten participants will battle for the ticket to Rotterdam in the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach. The show will be hosted by Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey, the same duo who did the job last year. Today: semi final allocation draw

On Tuesday 28 January at 16:10 CET, the Semi-Final Allocation Draw will take place to decide which country will perform in which of the 2 Semi-Finals. During the ceremony, the Host City Insignia will be handed over from the city of Tel Aviv to the Mayor of Rotterdam. You can watch the entire event here at 16:10 CET. You will be able to see the 2020 Eurovision hosts Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley and Jan Smit at work, as they will host the allocation draw too. The event will take place at Rotterdam’s City Hall. She was born on October 17, 1988, in Seoul, South Korea. At the age of five, Im began learning the piano and taught herself to sing by imitating her favorite artists. When she was nine years old, Im and her family emigrated to Australia.  At the age of 11, Im started studying piano at the Young Conservatorium of Music program at Griffith University. She excelled in piano competitions and won several scholarships and awards. During her school years, she mainly played the piano for the choir and violin for the school’s Silver Strings group. Im went on to graduate from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Music degree and later completed a Masters of Music Studies degree in contemporary voice at Griffith University.  Before participating in The X Factor Australia in 2013, Im had a brief career as a gospel singer in South Korea and released her debut studio album called “Dream” in 2010. She later re-released the album with additional tracks and also released a Christmas extended play called “Snow & Carol” in 2011. In 2012, Im released her second extended play called “Intimacy.” During the fifth season of The X Factor Australia, Im auditioned with Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and impressed the judges. She made it to the live finals and emerged as the winner of The X Factor Australia in 2013. Following her victory on The X Factor, Dami Im’s debut single as the winner, “Alive,” was released. She secured a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. Within four days of its release, “Alive” debuted at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart, achieving platinum certification for selling over 70,000 copies. Im’s self-titled second studio album, featuring studio recordings of her X Factor performances, was released on November 15, 2013. On March 3, it was announced that Im would represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, performing the song “Sound of Silence.” She also revealed that she would release a new album called “Classic Carpenters” in April, featuring cover versions of The Carpenters’ biggest songs. The album included music videos for the songs “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “There’s a Kind of Hush (All Over the World),” and “Yesterday Once More.” “Classic Carpenters” achieved massive success, reaching number three on the ARIA charts and number 23 on the South Korean charts. In the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, Im performed in the second semi-final and advanced to the final with the highest score in her semi-final.In the final, Im achieved the top score from jury and received and ended up in 2nd place overall. Her first solo studio album “Been waiting” in 2008. The song “Burn” hit the #1 spot in the Australian charts. Jessica’s second album “Get ’em girls” (2010) provided no less than four hit singles. Meanwhile, she started a career as an actress in the movie “Bran Nue Dae”, two years later followed by “The Sapphires”. Her third album “Beautiful” was released in 2013. On behalf of Australia, she was a guest performer in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Another challenge she got was performing at the opening ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup.  Her 2016 single “Where I’ll stay” was used as a promotion song for the coverage of the Olympic Games in Rio on Australian television. In 2018, Jessica Mauboy was involved in the Eurovision Song Contest again, now as a participant. She sang “We got love” and reached the final. In april 2019, Jessica Mauboy released a new single, “Sunday”, followed by “Little things”. The latter became a hit in the Australian charts and got the platinum status. It became a big hit in Australia, but it also hit the charts in Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and The Netherlands. On 9 December, 2016, his debut album “Isaiah” was released. Shortly after this, Isaiah was selected to represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. He sang the song “Don’t come easy”. Anja began writing material in both Los Angeles and Denmark. On 19 May 2015, Nissen released her follow-up single “Anyone Who Had a Heart”. The song achieved over 70,000 views on YouTube and was followed a third single “Triumph”.  Anja was also featured on the 2014 “We Love Disney” album singing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella. In 2016, Anja participated in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, Denmark’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, with the song “Never Alone”. The song was co-written by Danish Eurovision winner Emmelie de Forest and ended up in third place. A year later, Anja Nissen was more successful. She won Melodi Grand Prix and thus represented Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest, where she reached the Grand Final. In May 2017, Nissen released a 6-track EP titled “Where I Am”. She completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at Griffith University, followed by a Master of Music degree at Queensland University of Technology. As a classical singer, Kate Miller-Heidke has won the Elizabeth Muir Prize (2000), Donald Penman Prize (2001), Linda Edith Allen Memorial Prize (2002) and Horace Keats Prize (2002).  She has performed as an understudy in productions, “Sweeney Todd”, “Don Pasquale” and “Un ballo in maschera”. In July 2005 she made her solodebut with Opera Queensland in the role of Flora in “The Turn of the Screw”. From 2000, Kate Miller-Heidke played in several Brisbane alternative pop bands. Miller-Heidke became known in Brisbane from several performances and her 2005 appearance in Women in Voice 14 won her the Helpmann Award for Best Performance in an Australian Contemporary Concert.  In June 2004 Miller-Heidke recorded and distributed her first EP, “Telegram”. The songs were written by Keir Nuttall. He was the founder, lead guitarist and vocalist in Brisbane-based progressive rock band Transport, which formed in 2001. Nuttall and fellow Transport members have worked as part of Miller-Heidke’s backing band since 2004. In 2005 she released a second EP with four tracks, “Comikaze”, however only 500 copies were made. In 2005 Miller-Heidke turned from classical to pop music when “Space They Cannot Touch”, a track from”Telegram”, became a hit on Australia’s national youth radio network, Triple J. It led to national attention for her music. She was able to sign a contract with EMI Music Australia, started a national tour and performed at festivals as Woodford and Blue Mountains. She performed in a lot of tv-shows. Miller-Heidke was invited by Australian singer-songwriter Deborah Conway to take part in the 2006 Broad Festival project during August, with three other Australian female artists, they performed their own and each other’s songs. Miller-Heidke released her third EP, “Circular Breathing” with six tracks, in May 2006. One of the songs, “Apartment”, was also released on single. In 2007 she was able to release her debut album “Little Eve”. It peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold in 2008 by ARIA for shipment of 35000 copies. The lead single, “Words”, released in the same month, reached the top 50 on the related ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2007 she received five nominations, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist – Album for Little Eve and Producer of the Year for Magoo’s work on Little Eve, and Breakthrough Artist – Single for “Words”. Miller-Heidke’s second album, “Curiouser”, was released in 2008. It was recorded in Los Angeles. The album’s lead single, “Can’t Shake It” debuted on the Singles Chart at No. 38 in October 2008, making it her first top 40 song. “Curiouser” was her first top 10 album: peaking at No. 2. In April 2009 Miller-Heidke returned to operatic works and won critical acclaim for her performance as Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera. The single “Caught in the Crowd”, also reached the Australian singles charts. The team behind this song awarded the $US25,000 grand prize in the 2008 International Songwriting Competition for its composition. It was used by Australian secondary schools for anti-bullying programs. “Caught in the Crowd” was re-released in November and was accredited as a gold single in 2010. Her following single, “The Last Day on Earth”, reached No. 3 in Australia, her first top 10 hit. It had been used in promos for TV soap opera, Neighbours. “The Last Day on Earth” and “Curiouser” were both certified platinum by ARIA for shipment of 70000 units. Miller-Heidke toured throughout the US, United Kingdom and continental Europe as support act for Ben Folds. She released her first music DVD, Live in San Francisco (October 2010).  On 24 June 2011 Miller-Heidke’s side project, “Fatty Gets a Stylist”, released a self-titled album. She had formed the project as a short-term, alternative pop duo with Keir Nuttall. She sang the role of British Dancing Girl in the opera “The Death of Klinghoffer” for a two-week run in early 2012. Kate performed the role again at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in October 2014. Also in 2012 Miller-Heidke’s third Australian studio album, “Nightflight”, was released. The album peaked at No. 2 in the charts. Three singles were released. However, none of the singles reached the top 50. In November 2015, she issued a non-album single, “I’m Growing a Beard Downstairs for Christmas”, featuring comedy rock group, the Beards. On Tuesday 28 January at 16:10 CET, the Semi-Final Allocation Draw will take place to decide which country will perform in which of the 2 Semi-Finals. During the ceremony, the Host City Insignia will be handed over from the city of Tel Aviv to the Mayor of Rotterdam. You can watch the entire event here at 16:10 CET. As a classical singer, Kate Miller-Heidke has won the Elizabeth Muir Prize (2000), Donald Penman Prize (2001), Linda Edith Allen Memorial Prize (2002) and Horace Keats Prize (2002).  She has performed as an understudy in productions, “Sweeney Todd”, “Don Pasquale” and “Un ballo in maschera”. In July 2005 she made her solodebut with Opera Queensland in the role of Flora in “The Turn of the Screw”. From 2000, Kate Miller-Heidke played in several Brisbane alternative pop bands. Miller-Heidke became known in Brisbane from several performances and her 2005 appearance in Women in Voice 14 won her the Helpmann Award for Best Performance in an Australian Contemporary Concert.  In June 2004 Miller-Heidke recorded and distributed her first EP, “Telegram”. The songs were written by Keir Nuttall. He was the founder, lead guitarist and vocalist in Brisbane-based progressive rock band Transport, which formed in 2001. Nuttall and fellow Transport members have worked as part of Miller-Heidke’s backing band since 2004. In 2005 she released a second EP with four tracks, “Comikaze”, however only 500 copies were made. In 2005 Miller-Heidke turned from classical to pop music when “Space They Cannot Touch”, a track from”Telegram”, became a hit on Australia’s national youth radio network, Triple J. It led to national attention for her music. She was able to sign a contract with EMI Music Australia, started a national tour and performed at festivals as Woodford and Blue Mountains. She performed in a lot of tv-shows. Miller-Heidke was invited by Australian singer-songwriter Deborah Conway to take part in the 2006 Broad Festival project during August, with three other Australian female artists, they performed their own and each other’s songs. Miller-Heidke released her third EP, “Circular Breathing” with six tracks, in May 2006. One of the songs, “Apartment”, was also released on single. In 2007 she was able to release her debut album “Little Eve”. It peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold in 2008 by ARIA for shipment of 35000 copies. The lead single, “Words”, released in the same month, reached the top 50 on the related ARIA Singles Chart. This morning: Australia decides

This morning, 10:30 CET, Australia decides. It’s the second time Australia has a national final to decide who is going to represent them in the Eurovision Song Contest. You can watch the show here.  Ten participants will battle for the ticket to Rotterdam in the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach. The show will be hosted by Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey, the same duo who did the job last year. As a classical singer, Kate Miller-Heidke has won the Elizabeth Muir Prize (2000), Donald Penman Prize (2001), Linda Edith Allen Memorial Prize (2002) and Horace Keats Prize (2002).  She has performed as an understudy in productions, “Sweeney Todd”, “Don Pasquale” and “Un ballo in maschera”. In July 2005 she made her solodebut with Opera Queensland in the role of Flora in “The Turn of the Screw”. From 2000, Kate Miller-Heidke played in several Brisbane alternative pop bands. Miller-Heidke became known in Brisbane from several performances and her 2005 appearance in Women in Voice 14 won her the Helpmann Award for Best Performance in an Australian Contemporary Concert.  In June 2004 Miller-Heidke recorded and distributed her first EP, “Telegram”. The songs were written by Keir Nuttall. He was the founder, lead guitarist and vocalist in Brisbane-based progressive rock band Transport, which formed in 2001. Nuttall and fellow Transport members have worked as part of Miller-Heidke’s backing band since 2004. In 2005 she released a second EP with four tracks, “Comikaze”, however only 500 copies were made. In 2005 Miller-Heidke turned from classical to pop music when “Space They Cannot Touch”, a track from”Telegram”, became a hit on Australia’s national youth radio network, Triple J. It led to national attention for her music. She was able to sign a contract with EMI Music Australia, started a national tour and performed at festivals as Woodford and Blue Mountains. She performed in a lot of tv-shows. Miller-Heidke was invited by Australian singer-songwriter Deborah Conway to take part in the 2006 Broad Festival project during August, with three other Australian female artists, they performed their own and each other’s songs. Miller-Heidke released her third EP, “Circular Breathing” with six tracks, in May 2006. One of the songs, “Apartment”, was also released on single. In 2007 she was able to release her debut album “Little Eve”. It peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold in 2008 by ARIA for shipment of 35000 copies. The lead single, “Words”, released in the same month, reached the top 50 on the related ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2007 she received five nominations, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist – Album for Little Eve and Producer of the Year for Magoo’s work on Little Eve, and Breakthrough Artist – Single for “Words”. Miller-Heidke’s second album, “Curiouser”, was released in 2008. It was recorded in Los Angeles. In April 2009 Miller-Heidke returned to operatic works and won critical acclaim for her performance as Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera.
