Biography
Early Career and Debut
Tor Endresen (born 15 June 1959) is a Norwegian singer and composer. His music career has spanned nearly four decades. He began singing in local bands during his youth. He performed with groups like The White Rock and Salex in his hometown of Bergen. Endresen’s professional career took off when he joined drummer Pål Thowsen’s ensemble around 1985. In 1986, he released his debut album Call Me Stranger, recorded in collaboration with Thowsen. One of its singles was the song “Black Rain.” In 1987, it nearly became the theme song for the James Bond film The Living Daylights. Although that honor ultimately went to a-ha, the attention helped put Endresen on the map as a promising pop artist.
By the early 1990s, he had released several more albums and was gaining recognition in Norway’s music scene. His 1991 album Solo — his first entirely solo effort — even reached the Top 10 on the Norwegian charts. This success cemented his growing popularity.
Breakthrough and National Stardom
Endresen became a household name in Norway in the early 1990s. A major boost came from his role in the hit television series Lollipop. In that show, he performed nostalgic 1950s–60s songs as a “singing bartender”. The show was a massive success, running for 30 episodes and becoming one of the country’s most-watched music programs. It also spawned three soundtrack albums which sold over 300,000 copies in Norway. Riding this wave of popularity, Endresen enjoyed success on the charts with his own music. He scored year-end number-one hits on Norway’s Norsktoppen radio chart in both 1991 and 1992. The songs were the upbeat track “Radio Luxembourg” and his signature ballad “Ingen er så nydelig som du”. These songs, along with his energetic live performances, solidified Endresen’s status as one of the country’s leading pop entertainers.
Eurovision Journey
Endresen is particularly known for his persistence in Melodi Grand Prix, Norway’s national selection for Eurovision. He participated a record 12 times between 1987 and 2015. He had many strong entries and several near-misses in the contest (with multiple top-three finishes). However, he only won the competition once, in 1997. That victory sent him to the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 in Dublin, where he performed the upbeat song “San Francisco.” However, the international final did not go as hoped. Norway finished last that year with zero points.
Ironically, Endresen had already been on the Eurovision stage once before as a backing vocalist for Norway’s 1988 entry. Unfazed by the 1997 setback, he continued to try his luck in later MGP competitions. His final appearance came in 2015, when he teamed up with Elisabeth “Bettan” Andreassen on the duet “All Over the World.” That entry placed fourth in the Norwegian final.
Later Career and Legacy
In addition to pop music, Endresen broadened his career into musical theater and television. He took on starring roles in stage musicals such as Ain’t Misbehavin’ at Den Nationale Scene in 1994 and Chess in 2005. He also lent his voice to Norwegian versions of Disney films. Notably, he performed songs in Tarzan and The Emperor’s New Groove. These performances earned him two Disney Music Awards for best foreign soundtrack interpretations. Endresen became a familiar face on Norwegian TV as well. He appeared in popular shows like Skal vi danse (the local Dancing with the Stars) and the adventure series 71° Nord. In 2012, he showcased his vocal versatility on the singing competition Stjernekamp, where he reached the semi-finals.
Endresen remains active in music and entertainment today. He frequently joins all-star concert tours. For example, he has been part of the annual “Stille Natt, Hellige Natt” Christmas concert series alongside other renowned artists. In 2018, he released a country duet single with his daughter, Anne-Sophie Endresen. That same year, he charmed viewers on the TV show Hver gang vi møtes (“Each Time We Meet”) with his performances.
Even after decades of performing, he continues to draw live audiences. In 2019, Endresen celebrated his 60th birthday with two sold-out shows in Bergen. That same year, he received a star on Bergen’s Walk of Fame for his contributions to the city’s culture. To date, he has released around 25 albums and sold over one million records in Norway. He is now looking forward to marking 40 years as a recording artist in 2026. To celebrate, he plans a new album and a nationwide tour. Through all these endeavors, Tor Endresen has maintained his status as one of Norway’s most beloved entertainers.
