Biography
Patrick McGuigan, or Pat McGeegan, was an Irish singer and songwriter. He released his first record in 1963 as Pat McGeegan & The Big Four. He released several singles during the 1960s. McGeegan was a vocalist for several Irish pop groups of the late 1960s such as The Skyrockets Showband and The Big Four Showband.
In 1968, he won the Irish National Song Contest with the song “Chance of a lifetime”, which made him represent Ireland in the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest. One year later, he tried again but the song “Johnny Dreamer” was less successful. One of his greatest hits was a song called “Danny boy”, his version of a traditional English song. He sang it very often during boxing events where his son, Barry McGuigan, had to fight. He became ephemerally famous in the United States by performing the American anthem on 13 june 1986 at the World Boxing Championship, held in New Jersey. A year later, on the 27th of june 1987, McGeegan passed away.
