Biography

Maja Sarihodžić (maiden name: Hodžić) (Tuzla, July 12, 1981), better known by her stage name Maya Sar, is a Bosnian singer-songwriter of pop and entertainment music.

At the Music Academy in Sarajevo, Maya Sar graduated in piano studies. After successfully completing her studies, she established herself as a backing vocalist and collaborated with prominent regional names. In 2004, Maya Sar performed as a backing vocalist for Deen, who represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul. For several years, she was a member of Dino Merlin’s ensemble. With him, she performed in 2011 as a pianist and backing vocalist for the song “Love in Rewind” at the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf, where they secured the 6th place in the superfinal.

Maya Sar began her solo career in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2010 when she released the ballad “Nespretno” (Awkwardly). Her musical expression combines pop, soul, and the Bosnian love song “sevdalinka”. On her initiative, the song “Moj je život moja pjesma” (My Life is My Song) was created, through which she, together with her colleagues from the region, joined the activist fight against cervical cancer. Alongside Maya Sar, Nina Badrić from Croatia, Karolina Gočeva from North Macedonia, and Aleksandra Radović from Serbia sang. This song earned her the Award from the International League of Humanists (ILH). In 2005 and again in 2014, for the project “Moj je život moja pjesma”, she received an award from ECCA (European Association for the Fight Against Cervical Cancer).

In 2013 she teamed up with Marijan Brkic Brk to record the song and video “O meni nikom ne pričaj”. Sar’s debut studio album “Krive riječi” was released 1 June 2013.

In December 2015 she released a brand new single: “Naša ljubav, naša kuća”. In February 2016 she performed in Italy. She started a tour, Maya Sar Live In Theatre. The tour lasted 3 months, but in February 2017 she started anew. Meanwhile, she wrote two songs for Tereza Kesovija’s new album.

Live In Theatre went to Vienna in 2017. In 2018 she won the prize for Best Singer at Story.hr. In June 2019 she released a song “Kao sva djeca”, together with Vanna, Neno Belan and Jacques Houdek. The song was to get attention and money for “Power of children in movement – Special power league” is a project that the Academy of Healthy Living has been successfully organizing for several years, with the goal of including children with developmental difficulties in various sports activities.

In 2020, Maya Sar teamed up with Goran Kovačić for the song “Zar se nismo shvatili”. A few months later, her song “Hvala” was released. In December 2020 she teamed up with the Novosadski Big Band to sing the song “Novi Sad Zagreb Ljubljana”.

On 20 May 2022, the single “Ljubav” was released. Maya wrote the song for her daughter and recorded it in 2019, but it was only released 3 years later. In June 2023 a live album with recordings of her Live In Theatre Tour was released. In August of the same year she teamed up with the band Cubismo for the song “Spremna sam da živim”.
