Biography

Margot Hielscher was a German singer, actress and costume designer. From 1939 on she worked as a costume designer in the film. She was discovered by Theo Mackeben, who immediately hired her for the film. In 1940 she played her first role alongside Zarah Leander in “Das Herz der Königin”. Through her roles in various love comedies, in which she also emerged as a singer, she was soon one of the most popular actresses of German film during Worldwar II. She made several tours during wartime and thereafter as a singer for troop support.
After Worldwar II, she appeared as a singer in the film Hallo Fräulein (1949). During the filming she met her future husband, the film composer Friedrich Meyer, whom she married ten years later. From then on, the singing career had priority for her, in movies she often appeared on vocal performances. In 1957 and 1958 she represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest, respectively with the songs “Telefon Telefon” and “Für zwei Groschen Musik”. In the 1960s, she hosted her own tv show on Bavarian television, “Zu Gast bei Margot Hielscher”. She performed in many tv-series until the 1980s. In 1991/92 she appeared in Berlin at the Theater des Westens in the musical “Follies”.. One of her last TV roles she played in 1994 in the series “Der Nelkenkönig”, then she retired from the film business. Overall, Margot Hielscher participated in 60 feature films and in about 200 television productions. In addition, over 400 vocal recordings have been received from her.
Margot Hielscher died on 20 August 2017, six weeks before her 98th birthday, in Munich.
