Biography

Kraljevi ulice, translating to “Kings of the Street,” is a Croatian band formed in 1987 by Miran Hadži Veljković and Zlatko Petrović Pajo. Known for their open-air performances, especially at Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb, they gained fame as street performers and champions of traditional urban songs. Their music primarily consists of old-fashioned hits (schlagers), avoiding modern trends.

The group became widely recognized after their Eurovision journey. First, they took part in Dora, Croatia’s Eurovision selection, in 2006. Their song Kao san was the runner up. One year later, they were 2nd again, this time with the song Pjesma za novčić. In 2008, they won Dora, , with the song Romanca, performed alongside 75 Cents, making him the oldest Eurovision participant at the time. Romanca achieved third place in the semi-final and secured their place in the grand final in Belgrade, where they placed 21st.

In the years following Eurovision, Kraljevi ulice continued to perform and record music. They released the album Uživo Iz Gavele in 2012, a live recording showcasing their timeless street charm and connection with audiences. This album captured their unique blend of traditional urban melodies performed in a vibrant and intimate setting, further cementing their reputation as a band deeply rooted in Croatian musical heritage.

The group also remained active in cultural events, continuing to organize and perform at notable festivals like Cest is d’Best, Ljeto na Štrosu, and others across Croatia. Their dedication to preserving and promoting Croatia’s musical traditions has earned them respect beyond street performances.

Kraljevi ulice’s journey from street performers to representing Croatia on the international Eurovision stage reflects their commitment to their craft. Their ability to adapt while staying true to their musical roots makes them an enduring figure in Croatia’s cultural scene.
