Biography
Katja Ebstein is a German singer. She made her debut on tv performing for Sender Freies Berlin in 1964. She released her first two singles under the stage name “Katja”, but they were unsuccessful. In the same year she participated, also with moderate success, in the Festival in Knokke, Belgium. In 1969 she had her first successful singles After successes with the first two singles, After successes with the first two singles, “Der Draht in der Sonne” and … and … “und wenn der Regen fällt”. followed by her debut album. She represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest three times, in 1970, 1971, and 1980. Her best performance was in 1980 when she gained second place Ebstein is the most successful performer to have taken part in the contest, without ever winning. She is the only singer to appear in the top three on three separate occasions.
Katja Ebstein toured with the orchestra of James Last from September to November 1970. Further tours followed in the years that Ebstein had successes with titles such as “Und wenn ein neuer Tag erwacht”, “Ein kleines Lied vom Frieden”, “Der Stern von Mykonos” and “Ein Indiojunge aus Peru” she became one of the most successful German pop singers. In 1972 she appeared in the program “Ein Kessel Bunte” in the GDR. The music industry has honored her with numerous awards.
In the best years of the German Schlager Ebstein regularly presented her own music shows, whose most important were Katja – Die Stimme (1970), Katja & Co. (1976), Konzert frei Haus (1980), Das ist mein Milieu (1981) and Mein Name ist Katja (1982). The tv station of the GDR broadcast her live concerts in East Berlin in 1983 as well as in 1986 and 1987.
Her musical work continued. In 1986 she presented with “Mensch, sag’doch einfach ‘Na’ ” and the song of the ARD television lottery.
Together with the WDR Chamber Symphony Orchestra, Ebstein performed “Die geschichte vom Soldaten” by Igor Stravinsky in 2001. In 2005 she celebrated her 40th anniversary as a singer. On January 7, 2008 Federal President Horst Köhler awarded Katja Ebstein the Cross of Merit for the Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her social and artistic commitment.
In 2011, she made a comeback with the cover version of Wunder is always together with the German rapper JokA.
