Biography
José Vélez was born in the city of Telde on the island of Gran Canaria. At the age of 8, he began acting as a singer with a local group called “Trio Maravillas”. At the age of 12, José was invited to participate in the festival of the song “Isla de La Palma”.
In 1967, he went to Madrid. He worked with orchestra’s and in party halls. His first single was “Es así la vida”. He took part in the preselections for Festival de Viña del Mar in Chile. A second single was released and he traveled to Latin America. In 1974, he released his debut album. The album was, again, a success in Latin America, but also in Canada, Germany and Finland. He took part in the 1976 Sopot festival. Two years later, he represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Bailemos un vals”. The song is a hit in Belgium and is even recorded in Japanese. After Eurovision, he released several albums, of which “Confidencias” (1982) is the greatest success. Vélez released a lot of albums, but since 1997 the success started to fade. It was only in 2005 that he made a comeback with an album called “Por ti, 30 años”, with new and unpublished material. He recorded his last album so far in 2010, and currently lives in Latin America.
