Biography
Joseph Grech is a Maltese singer, born in Cospicua. He was the first singer to win the Malta Song Festival in 1960, with the song “Vola uccellino”. Two years later, he did the same again with the song “”Żgħażagħ Rebbieħa”. Three years later, he won the prize of ‘best foreign singer” in an Italian festival. In 1967, the song “Il-Kaċċatur” became a huge hit in Malta for Joe Grech. Again, in the same year, he won the Malta Song Festival with his entry “Serenata”.
In 1971, Joe Grech was the first Maltese singer to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest. The song was called “Marija L-Maltija”.
In the 1970s, Joe Grech also toured abroad, through the UK, Ireland and Canada, Italy and Australia. He was able to release an album called “Sahha Malta With Joe Grech”. On 12 march 1977, he performed in the Sidney Opera House in Australia.
Joe married Josephine Buttigieg on 24 September 1961. They have a daughter Marcelle.
