Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Guildo Horn was born Horst Heinz Köhler on 15 February 1963 in Trier, West Germany. Before music fame, he studied special education and even worked as a music therapist for people with disabilities. Horn’s passion, however, was Schlager music. In 1991 he began performing Schlager songs in his hometown, adding a comedic and ironic twist. By 1992, this energetic entertainer was singing every Sunday at the Luxor Club in Cologne, delighting audiences with tongue-in-cheek Schlager performances. These lively weekly shows built him a cult following.
His big break came in 1994 when he appeared on the ZDF-Hitparade television contest. Horn performed the cheeky song “Ich mag Steffi (Graf)”, a parody cover of a Bee Gees hit, and won third place. He soon toured across Germany. Horn even performed at the major rock festival Rock am Ring in 1996, an unusual feat for a Schlager singer. During this period, Horn also released his early albums. His 1995 album Sternstunden der Zärtlichkeit reached the German charts, and the 1996 single “Ich find Schlager toll” (a playful cover of “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”) became a minor hit. In 1997, Horn’s album Danke! hit number 3 on the charts and earned a gold certification in Germany.
Rise to Fame and Eurovision 1998
By the late 1990s, Guildo Horn had developed a reputation as an eccentric showman known for outrageous outfits and fun-loving stage antics. His big fame peak came in 1998, when he was selected to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest . Together with his band Die Orthopädischen Strümpfe (which translates to “The Orthopedic Stockings”), Horn performed the song “Guildo hat euch lieb!” (“Guildo loves you!”). The track was written by German TV comedian Stefan Raab, who used the alias “Alf Igel” as a tongue-in-cheek nod to famous Eurovision composer Ralph Siegel. Horn’s Eurovision performance became the stuff of legend. He bounded around the stage in a green velvet shirt, climbed the lighting gantries, and even played a set of cowbells during the song. At one point he leapt into the audience and playfully ruffled the hair of a surprised former host, making the crowd roar with laughter.
This over-the-top showmanship paid off. The European audience was charmed. Horn finished 7th out of 25 entries, earning 86 points. More importantly, his cheeky performance reignited German public interest in Eurovision, which had been waning. The media buzz around “Guildo hat euch lieb” is credited with sparking a Eurovision revival in Germany, driven in part by Horn’s media-savvy manager Johannes Kram. Guildo Horn had become a national celebrity, affectionately known for bringing humor and “Guildo-mania” to Eurovision.
Continued Musical Career and Hits
After Eurovision, Guildo Horn continued to thrive as a recording artist and live performer. He remained true to his Schlager roots, often infusing rock and parody elements into his music. Horn has released numerous albums over the years, more than ten studio albums in total. That includes Schön! (1999), Der König der Möwen (2002), and later projects like the holiday album Weihnachtsfestival der Liebe (2012). He even put out titles with playful names such as Schlager Unser (2014) and Strumpf ist Trumpf (2018). Many of his popular songs are cover versions of international hits cleverly adapted into Schlager style. For example, the Bee Gees’ ballad “How Deep Is Your Love” was transformed into Horn’s ode to a tennis star, “Ich mag Steffi Graf” (“I Like Steffi Graf”). Joan Jett’s rock anthem “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” became Horn’s tongue-in-cheek “Ich find Schlager toll” (“I Find Schlager Great”).
On stage, Guildo Horn is in his element. He regularly tours and remains a popular live act at festivals and events across Germany. He is known to engage in constant interaction with the audience, often wearing flamboyant costumes and encouraging sing-alongs. Since 1994, Horn has even hosted an annual Christmas concert in his hometown Trier every December 23. It’s a tradition that draws loyal crowds each year. Decades after his breakthrough, Guildo Horn’s musical shows are still exuberant celebrations of fun. In fact, in 2024 the city of Trier honored him with a special Sold-Out Award for repeatedly filling concert halls to capacity. It’s clear that his slogan “Guildo loves you” continues to resonate with fans old and new.
Acting and Television Ventures
Beyond music, Guildo Horn expanded his career into acting and television. In the late 1990s he made his acting debut with small roles, including a cameo on the RTL soap opera Unter uns in 1997 and a bit part in the film Das erste Semester (1997). In 1999, Horn took on a leading role in the comedy film Waschen, Schneiden, Legen, playing a flamboyant hairdresser. That was a character quite fitting for his on-stage persona. While that film received mixed reviews, it showcased Horn’s willingness to poke fun at himself. He also lent his voice to the German version of the video game Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc (2003), where he voiced the character Globox. On stage, Horn proved his versatility by acting in musical theater and operettas.
He appeared in a German production of the musical Kiss Me, Kate in 2005 and portrayed the character Riff-Raff in The Rocky Horror Show at Theater Hagen in multiple seasons (2012, 2013, 2016). He even performed in an operetta adaptation called Leporellos Tagebücher, based on Mozart’s Don Giovanni, earning praise for his role as Leporello. Guildo’s natural charm also made him a fit for television hosting.
In 2006, he launched a unique talk show on SWR television called “Guildo und seine Gäste” (“Guildo and His Guests”). Horn chatted with people with intellectual disabilities about the week’s news and life topics, combining humor with heartfelt understanding. The show was well-received and earned Horn the BG Paralympic Media Award in 2006 for its inclusive approach. He was also honored with the “Bobby” Media Award in 2007 by the Lebenshilfe organization for his contributions to disability awareness on TV. That same year, Horn showed off his dance moves on the popular show Let’s Dance, making it to the sixth place with partner Motsi Mabuse.
