Biography

Delhusa Gjon is a Hungarian singer, composer and lyricist of Albanian origin. He started his music career at a young age. He was only 18 when he performed the song “Hegyek lánya” at the Dance Song Festival in 1971. The year 1974 was a huge success for him, as he earned four golden discs. A German-language single was released in East-Germany, making it a success abroad. Already in the year of its publication, he was awarded the Grand Prix of the Dresden Festival. In 1975 he was selected the singer of the year.In 1979 he released his first album. He participated in all major Eastern European festivals until 1980. He wrote songs for Goldie Ens and the Goombay Dance Band. In 1980, he signed a 3-year contract with the West German TELDEC record label, and in 1983 offered another 3-year contract to the star, but on condition that he would settle in Germany.
In 1988, he participated in a song contest in Cuba and became the best composer of the competition. In 1989, the album Csavargó was released in Hungary. Within a few days, it became a gold record, and two years later, it was on platinum status. In 1996, he received Albania’s highest cultural government award for his album Mediterranean. in the same year, he represented Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest, but failed to qualify from the audioselection. In 1997, a CD was released in Curacao featuring the winning songs of the 1988 festival.
In 2000, he received the Singer of the Year award from the Roma community. On March 15, 2005 he was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. In 2010, he was subject of the show “I Love Gjoni”, where he was looking for someone to marry him.
