Roxen was supposed to represent Romania last year with “Alcohol you”. The choice for Roxen, without a preselection with multiple artists, was due to the number 1 hit she had in Romania in November 2019.Roxen is 21 years old. In her short career she released several singles that were successful in the Romanian Airplay charts. It was no surprise, then, that Roxen was internally re-selected to represent her country. The song she will sing this year is called “Amnesia”.

The Ethiopian-Israeli singer would then sing “Feker libi”, a song with a title in Amharic, the language of Ethiopia. When it became known that the Eurovision song contest was canceled, she was told about it live on television. It was a big surprise when, sometime in 2019, it was announced that Hooverphonic would be representing Belgium. A group with an enormous track record since 1996. The group had a new female singer, so that worked out well. Meanwhile, that singer, Luka Cruysberghs, has had to make way for Geke Arnaert again. She has sung with Hooverphonic before and is now returning.The song with which they will represent Belgium is called “The wrong place”.

Her full name is Albina Grčić, but she leaves her last name at home for the occasion. She participated in the X-Factor but withdrew when she was allowed to continue only as part of a girl group. Cyprus thanked Sandro Nicolas, who would participate in 2020, for services rendered. Instead, they teamed up with Athens-born Elena Tsagrinou.That was not without any struggle. The Orthodox Church protested against the song “El diablo”. A declaration of love to the devil was not done they said, and they even demanded from the Cypriot government that the song had to be withdrawn. They hadn’t listened really well: the song was by no means a song of praise to the devil, but is about a woman who falls for a bad man.

Irish Lesley Roy had 2 hits in the United States in 2008. After that she was mainly busy writing songs for others. She did release a few singles herself, but they were not a success. In 2020 it all changed: Lesley Roy was internally selected for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “The story of my life”. It took a while, but in the end Irish broadcaster RTÉ chose her again to go to the contest in 2021. She will sing the song “Maps” in Rotterdam.

When Vasil Garvanliev is on the podium for North Macedonia, he will be relieved. He was already there as a backing vocalist when Tamara Todevska finished seventh. In 2020 he would represent North Macedonia himself. This was canceled due to the Corona crisis. North Macedonian broadcaster selected him for the 2021 contest. But when the clip of “Here I stand” was published, it turned out that it contained three paintings in the colors of the Bulgarian flag. A petition was held by extreme nationalists not to send Vasil to the Eurovision song contest. The broadcaster started an investigation.Fortunately, the whole story fizzled out. Eurovision fans organized a counter-petition and Vasil is allowed to go to Rotterdam after all.

Three years later a second album came and in 2020 she was chosen to represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest. Unfortunately, as we know, this was canceled. The Australian broadcaster quickly expressed confidence in Montaigne, which is why she will be singing the song “Technicolor” this year.

The Swedish candidate usually attracts a lot of attention. That’s because the Swedish preselection, Melodifestivalen, is watched by many people, also outside of Sweden. This year Tusse won. His actual name is Tousin Chiza. He was born in the DR Congo. 2 years ago he won the Swedish version of “… got talent”. He had not had a big hit so far but his Eurovision song “Voice” is now number 1 in the Swedish charts.
